Sam Gimbel: Statement
I have been fortunate that I grew up in New York City and Los Angeles. In doing so I received a Bi coastal education in the arts. My mother was a renowned sculptress and my grandmother an international art collector. This gave me a unique view of the world and the art that comes out of it.
As a result I have a strong beat on what art is and where it is headed in the world.
What can I say that hasn’t been said already? I paint because that is what I do best. So that said, what is it that drives me to paint? I am trying to tell a story of life and its moments in my visual sense. I try to evoke a special place the viewer can go and decide for her or himself what it means to them. I rely on the intuitive process we all posses and where it will take you (as viewer). Maybe down a road never seen before, it’s anyone’s guess, but also my hope! In my works I am balancing color and form, and in doing so I can deal with issues of the mind and life. Situations, that go from biographical in nature to the human form. This lets me go from the abstract to the figurative with ease and in doing so I am able to bring in my audience. Its what art is all about, letting our audience experience what we are feeling and thinking. In other words it is the communication we all seek. It can either leave a person feeling their heart has stopped and they are about to move to tears or they are worked into a total frenzy. In this dance of the mind something happens. I have done my job! Gimbel has lived in New York City, Los Angeles California, The Big Island of Hawaii, Ashland Oregon and now resides in Kungsbacka Sweden.
